Hitler Dies in Bunker: The Nazi Regime Collapses
Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide in the Fuhrerbunker in Berlin on April 30, 1945, as Soviet troops fought less than 500 meters from the Reich Chancellery. Hitler shot himself in the right temple with a Walther PPK pistol at approximately 3:30 PM. Braun took a cyanide capsule. Their bodies were carried to the garden, doused with 200 liters of petrol, and burned. Soviet intelligence teams recovered charred remains from a bomb crater on May 4. The identification was confirmed through dental records by Hitler's dentist's assistant. Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, appointed successor in Hitler's testament, authorized the unconditional surrender on May 7-8. The bunker was eventually demolished, and the site is now a parking lot in central Berlin.
