Saigon Falls: The Vietnam War Ends in Communist Victory

North Vietnamese tanks crashed through the gates of Independence Palace in Saigon at 10:45 AM on April 30, 1975, ending the Vietnam War. Colonel Bui Tin accepted the surrender from General Duong Van Minh, who had been president for just two days. NVA soldier Bui Quang Than raised the Viet Cong flag over the palace. The fall of Saigon completed the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule after 30 years of conflict that killed an estimated 1.3 million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians on both sides, plus 58,220 Americans. The city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City on July 2, 1976. Approximately 130,000 Vietnamese fled as refugees in the immediate aftermath; over the next decade, another 1.6 million "boat people" would follow.
