Biography

Ali Hosseini Khamenei was an Iranian politician and Shia cleric who served as the second supreme leader of Iran from 1989 until his assassination in the 2026 Iran war. He previously served as the third president of Iran from 1981 to 1989. His tenure as supreme leader, spanning 36 years and six months, made him the longest-serving head of state in West Asia at the time of his death. He held the title of Ayatollah and was considered one of the world's leading Muslim marja'.

1981 Event

Elected president of Iran at 42 after the previous president was assassinated by a bomb. Survived an assassination attempt himself in 1981 that paralyzed his right hand. Served two terms.

1989 Event

Named Supreme Leader of Iran the day after Khomeini died. He hadn't been the obvious successor. The Assembly of Experts chose him partly because he was seen as controllable. He proved them wrong.

2009 Event

Backed the disputed reelection of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Millions protested in the Green Movement. Khamenei ordered a crackdown. Dozens were killed. Thousands arrested. The protests were crushed.

2026 Death

Killed in the 2026 Iran war. Had served as Supreme Leader for nearly 37 years, longer than any other head of state in West Asia. He held the title of Ayatollah.
