Brian Douglas Wilson was an American musician, singer, songwriter and record producer who co-founded the Beach Boys and received widespread recognition as one of the most innovative and significant musical figures of his era. His work was distinguished for its high production values, complex harmonies and orchestrations, vocal layering, introspective lyrics, and ingenuousness. He was also known for his versatile head voice and falsetto.

1961 Event

Co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Dennis and Carl, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Their early surf-rock sound was Brian's creation from the start.

1966 Event

Released Pet Sounds. He'd stopped touring to focus entirely on studio production. The album used session musicians, unconventional instruments, and harmonies that Paul McCartney called the greatest record ever made.

1967 Event

Abandoned the Smile sessions after a nervous breakdown. The album wouldn't be completed and released for 37 years. He spent much of the next two decades in bed, battling mental illness.

2004 Event

Finally released a completed version of Smile as a solo album. Critics gave it near-universal praise. Thirty-seven years between conception and completion.

2025 Death

Died at 82. He'd been placed under a conservatorship in 2024 due to a major neurocognitive disorder. His influence on studio production, vocal arrangement, and pop composition was without parallel.
