Biography
Phutthayotfa Chulalok, posthumously honoured as King Phutthayotfa Chulalok the Great, also known by his regnal name Rama I, was the founder of the Rattanakosin Kingdom and the first King of Siam from the reigning Chakri dynasty. He ascended the throne in 1782, following the deposition of King Taksin of Thonburi. He was also celebrated as the founder of Rattanakosin as the new capital of the reunited kingdom.

Born Thong Duang in Ayutthaya, Siam. His father was a minor court official. Nothing about his birth suggested he'd one day found a dynasty.
Served as a military commander under King Taksin after the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya and destroyed the old capital. Thong Duang proved himself in campaigns across Siam, Laos, and Cambodia.
Overthrew King Taksin, who'd grown erratic and claimed to be the next Buddha. Founded the Chakri dynasty. His descendants still reign in Thailand today.
Founded Bangkok. Moved the capital across the Chao Phraya River to a small trading post called Rattanakosin. Ordered the construction of the Grand Palace.
Repelled a massive Burmese invasion. Nine armies entered Siam simultaneously. Rama I's forces defeated them all. The Burmese never seriously threatened Siam again.
