Timeline
The story of Nerva, told in moments.
Born Marcus Cocceius Nerva in Narni, Umbria. His family had deep ties to Roman imperial politics. His grandfather served as consul under Augustus.
Helped expose the Pisonian conspiracy against Nero. The emperor rewarded him with triumphal honors. Nerva was 34 and already a skilled court survivor.
Became emperor at age 65 after Domitian was assassinated by palace conspirators. The Senate chose Nerva because he was old, childless, and inoffensive.
Adopted the military commander Trajan as his heir. It was a calculated move. The Praetorian Guard had nearly overthrown him months earlier.
Died after a fever at 67. His 16-month reign established the principle of adoptive succession. The next four emperors all inherited power the same way.
